Are you interested in starting a blog for income? If so, you are in the right place. Blogs are great options for generating consistent income online.
I created a blog in order to free myself from a physically demanding retail job. With consistent effort, I was able to generate steady income and transition into working for myself.
I’m always on the pursuit to learn and improve with my online business. However, after blogging for many years now, I am able to share some of these helpful tips for beginners.
1. Create a Blog On a Topic You Have a Genuine Interest In
This is key as you have to create content for your blog on a regular basis. If you don’t have a genuine interest in the topic, you’ll likely want to quit. I’ve made this mistake many times in the past.
I once created a blog about golf when I have zero interest in golf. I’ve never even played a round of golf. I chose the topic because I thought it would generate a good steady income.
Eventually, I lost interest in the blog and abandoned it. If you need help selecting a niche, read this post.
2. Use a Reliable Web Host and WordPress
Web hosting is something that you do not want to take lightly. I made the mistake of hosting one of my blogs on a service that didn’t even provide access to a CPanel (a web hosting admin area.)
I had the worst experience. Some of my blog pages would not load for on reason at all. When I contacted customer support, they fixed it temporarily but it affected other parts of my website.
I recommend using a reputable and realiable web host like HostPapa. I use them for my niche blogs and they are great for new bloggers.
They will provide you with a year of free domain registration and will auto-install WordPress for you when you choose any Optimized WordPress Hosting Plan.
3. Do Your Keyword Research
I don’t start a new blog post without doing keyword research first. It’s important to create content that people are actually searching for. This gives you a much higher chance of ranking well in the search results.
There some good paid keyword tools out there but there are two free keyword tools that I use often. They include Answer The Public and Keyword.io. Both of these tools will give you plenty of ideas for new blog posts.
It helps to do your keyword research in advance and come up with at least 30 days worth. That will help you to be more productive. When it is time to write, you can select from your list, come up with a title, and begin writing.
4. Stick to a Blogging Schedule
It really helps to create a blogging schedule for yourself. We all lead busy lives and blogging is too easy to put on the back burner.
However, it is not ideal to skip blogging when your goal is to earn income with your blog. Content is king and without content, you blog will not rank very well if at all.
5. Write Longer Content
Short blog posts won’t cut it when you’re trying to rank well. There is a lot of competition in just about every niche that you can imagine.
If you take note, much of the content that ranks well is well over 1,000 words. SEO studies have been conducted as well.
Your goal should be to create the best content that you can with each blog post that you write. The easiest way to do that is to go into each new post with the intent to help your readers.
When you do this, you will naturally write longer content. I used to be intimidated at the thought of writing 1,000+ word blog posts. However, when I write to help people, it happens easily.
6. Reply to Blog Comments
As your blog posts rank, you’ll likely start to receive post comments from web visitors. When you do, it’s important to reply to those comments.
It does two things. For one, it shows your readers that you are active and they will appreciate your response. Second, comments add content to your blog post so that you can rank for even more keywords.
7. Promote Your Content On YouTube
If you do not have a YouTube channel already, you may want to consider starting one. I create YouTube videos related to my blog posts.
If the thought of creating videos intimidates you, don’t worry. I am still not comfortable putting myself on camera so a majority of the time, I don’t.
I create screencast videos using Screencast-O-Matic. It enables me to create video tutorials recording my computer screen.
YouTube is great for promoting your blog posts since you can link them in your video descriptions. I receive visits almost every day from my YouTube videos.
8. Promote Affiliate Products
There are various ways to monetize a blog in order to earn income but my favorite and preferred method is by promoting affiliate products.
Affiliate marketing is the promotion of another company’s products or services in exchange for a commission when a sale is made.
There are tons of companies with affiliate programs to include Amazon, Walmart, Target, and more. There are affiliate programs for not only physical goods but software and services as well.
One of my favorite things to promote is software because I use various software in my online business. It is easy for me to recommend products that I already use and am familiar with.
In fact, I highly recommend that you only promote products that you have experience with. You’ll find that it is much easier to create content about products that you actually use.
Your readers will be more likely to click on your affiliate links and make a purchase as well.
9. Be Consistent
Blogging often is important for earning income as well. The more content that you create, the more posts you’ll have ranked in the search engines.
Search engines will crawl your website often when you create new blog posts on a consistent basis. It isn’t a good idea to write one post one week and then another three months later.
If the bare minimum that you can do is post once per week, then be consistent once per week.
10. Don’t Quit!
Last but not least, and probably the most important tip is: don’t quit! Earning income with a blog is a marathon, not a sprint. It isn’t fast money.
However, if you stick with it and be consistent, you can earn a semi-passive income that will last for years to come. Think of blogging as a long-term investment. A year from now, you’ll be so glad that you started.
When I started, there were plenty of times that I became frustrated. Had I given up, I wouldn’t be where I am today with my online business.
I hope these tips give you a good starting point with your own blogging journey. I have plenty of articles written about earning income with a blog that you can read here.
