Dropshipping with WordPress is a smart choice for a variety of reasons. Two reasons that stand out most for me are:
1: retaining 100% store ownership
2: not paying recurring monthly fees
Regardless of what your reasons are, getting a dropship store set up with WordPress is easier than you think.
You don’t need any prior experience to do it and it can be done fairly quickly once you understand all of the steps.
Step 1: How to Choose an Awesome Niche for Dropshipping
There is nothing technical in this step but you won’t get very far without doing this first. What do you want to sell?
Choosing a niche is often the biggest stumbling block for many new online business owners. There are so many niches to go into when it comes to dropshipping.
The first thing to ask yourself is what are you interested in? It is difficult to sell things you have no interest in.
I have done this in the past by creating websites in niches I thought were great money makers. Eventually, I ended up abandoning every project I started.
A great way to generate some niche ideas is to visit AliExpress.com which also happens to be the dropship supplier I recommend using.
They sell almost anything you can imagine. Click on the different categories on the website.
For example, if you wanted to create a store around how to get better sleep, you could sell items such as:
- Essential oil diffusers
- Sound machines
- Sleeping eye masks
- Anti-snoring devices
What about a store in the cycling niche? You could sell products like:
- Gel pad seats
- Rear view mirrors
- Handlebar mounts
- Reflective cycling vests
This step requires the most thinking but once you have your niche narrowed down, you’re ready to move on to the next steps.
Step 2: Pick a Domain Name for Your Store
Your domain name can be anything you want but it helps to have the name relate to what you are selling.
You can incorporate keywords related to your niche or go with a more original name for branding purposes.
Keep in mind that a lot of domain names are taken already so you may have to play around with your name by adding someing on the end.
Some good words to add on to the end of a domain name can include:
There are many places to buy a domain name. I buy most of my domains from NameCheap.com.
Step 3: Sign Up with a Web Host
There are TONS of web hosting providers out there and most of them will do a great job with hosting your website.
I recommend choosing a hosting provider that has the ionCube loader installed. The reason being is that the WordPress dropshipping plugin that I recommend below requires it.
SiteGround web hosting has ionCube loader intalled. However, don’t stress too much about it.
Even if the hosting provider you have now or want to sign up with doesn’t have it installed, you can request they install it for you.
You may also want to check that your hosting provider specializes in WordPress hosting and eCommerce stores.
They may offer special plans that provide more features for these types of websites. Once you have your web hosting, you’ll need to connect your new domain name to your account.
This is a very easy process. It is a matter of going into your account where you bought your domain name.
You will find a link to update your nameserver. Your nameserver information is provided by your hosting provider and looks similar to this:
Once you update this information, your domain name will be connected to your hosting account within 24-48 hours.
It usually updates fairly quickly. Here is a video tutorial of how to update your nameservers on NameCheap:
Step 4: Install WordPress – One-Click Installation
The great thing about a majority of web hosting providers is that you do not need to install WordPress on your own.
Most of them have one-click software installations with WordPress included. You literally fill out a few fields and click install.
Within a matter of minutes your new WordPress website is up and running. You can go in and update your general settings and such.
The admin area of WordPress is user-friendly so you’ll get the hang of using it fairly quickly if you are a first time user.
Now you are ready to install your actual dropshipping store.
Step 5: Use the AliDropship Plugin
This is literally where the magic happens. 🙂 I recommend using the AliDropship Plugin.
It is possibly one of the best WordPress dropshipping plugins online. You install it like any other WordPress plugin.
Once it is installed, it transforms your WordPress website into a fully functioning AliExpress dropshipping store.
It enables you to import products from AliExpress using the admin area or by using the free Chrome browser extension.
You can choose a store theme from the theme section of their website. Using the plugin is easy. It support various payment gateways (credit card processors) and has a ton of features.
The plugin automates many important tasks such as automated order fulfillment and automated order tracking.
If you are a fan of using WooCommerce, they have you covered there as well. You have the option of using the WooCommerce version of the plugin called AliDropship Woo.
How to Set Up Your AliExpress Dropshipping Store Using WordPress and AliDropship
I hope this brief tutorial has shown you how easy it is to set up a dropshipping store using WordPress.
Two important reasons why I prefer using WordPress and AliDropship for dropshipping is that you retain 100% ownership of your store and there are no monthly recurring fees.
These two reasons are important as a business owner. When using other third-party eCommerce platforms you are at the mercy of them being able to close your store at any time for any reason.
You pay monthly fees to lease their software but you also risk them having the ability to close down your store. I’d rather have full control of my business.
