I Don’t Want to Be an Administrative Assistant Anymore

I don’t need to be an administrative assistant to know that the position is one that is underpaid and underappreciated.

Administrative assistants are often the glue that holds an office together. Yet, I can bet that if you are an administrative assistant and reading this post, you are ready to find a different job.

I was in a similar situation. Before I started my online business, I was working a retail job and wanted out. They pay was awful and so were the hours.

I created a website while I worked that retail job and I was able to quit that job and work for myself. I will explain what I did and how you can do it too.

Before I get started, I want to say that what I write here is no guarantee that you will achieve the same results. Your results are based on your effort and dedication to what is taught here. All information provided is based on best practices and for educational purposes only.

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s dive in. What I’ll teach you here can be done part-time and develop into a full-time business if that is what you want to work towards.

Why Start an Online Business?

The big problem that many people face when it comes to employment is low wages. It isn’t uncommon to have other streams of income to make ends meet.

Sometimes it can mean taking on a second job. However, a second job is inconvenient when you have other priorities to take care of.

That is what makes an online business a smart business to start. Most online businesses are low-cost and easy to start.

The one that I am in is one of the lowest-cost online business models. You can get started for less than $25 in most cases.

You can work on your online business in your spare time. I worked on mine before shifts, after work, and on the weekends.

The hard work paid off. It isn’t all about hard work and no fun. What is great about this business model is that you get to decide what you want your website to be about.

You will actually enjoy working on your business. After all, if it isn’t fun, what is the point, right? You won’t want to stick with it if it isn’t fun.

The Online Business Model I Follow

Now let’s talk about the business that I am in. I am an affiliate marketer. If you’ve never heard the term, here is a definition of it:

Affiliate marketing is the promotion of another company’s products and/or services in exchange for a commission when a sale is made.

To put it in simpler terms, you help people by introducing them to products or services that solve their issues.

For example, let’s say you have experience with losing weight following the keto diet. You want to help others that are new to the diet and want to lose weight too.

You create a website in which you write articles talking about your own experience. One of the things that really helped you was a particular keto cookbook.

You discover that the book you used has an affiliate program. You apply for the program and once approved, you have access to your affiliate links.

Affiliate links are special tracking links that give you credit when someone uses your link to make a purchase.

When you write your articles, you mention that the particular keto cookbook helped you and you link to it using your affiliate link.

Anytime someone clicks on your affiliate links and buys the cookbook, you make money! It really is that simple.

You don’t have to have your own product, you don’t have to ship anything, and you don’t handle any customer service.

How to Get Started

Getting started is easy but it does take the right mindset. You will be creating what is called a “niche website” or “niche blog.”

Growing a blog takes time. The income will not come right away. You can expect to wait months before you make your first sale.

However, once your website gains traction, you will have an online business that can generate income for years to come.

Step 1: Niche Selection

The first step in creating a niche website is to choose a niche. A niche is a segment of a market. There are TONS of niches to choose from.

Take a look at the screen capture below:

Example of a niche website

The above image is a screen capture of a niche website that focuses on football snack helmets. It is a sub-niche of the football niche.

You can imagine that the owner of this website enjoys football so it was fun to create. Now it earns the owner hundreds if not thousands of dollars per month.

Here are some niche ideas to get you brainstorming:

  • Personal development
  • Dating tips
  • Homebrewing beer
  • Meal prep
  • Survivalists
  • Fashion
  • Credit repair
  • Technology
  • Parenting tips

I recommend selecting a niche that you have a genuine interest in. You will enjoy working on your website and the more fun it is, the more you will stick with it.

Step 2: Registering a Domain

Once you have figured out your niche, you can register your own domain name. You’ll have to generate some ideas for your name.

When you have some ideas for your domain name, you can search for them and buy them at any domain registration service. I buy most of my domain names from NameCheap.com.

Your domain name will connect to a web hosting provider. More on this below.

Step 3: Getting Your Own Website

The next step is to get your own website. I don’t recommend using free website creation services. You won’t have full control or ownership when using free services.

What you’ll want to get is a self-hosted WordPress website. Most commercial web hosting providers provide one-click WordPress installation.

a2Hosting will install WordPress for you when you select any of their WordPress hosting plans. They will make it easy to connect your domain name to your website.

Step 4: Join Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs are free to join. Some may have an approval process but almost all will approve you instantly.

An easy way to search for affiliate programs is to type “niche name + affiliate program” into a search engine.

You can also type “product name + affiliate program” if there is a particular product that you want to search for.

Don’t worry about the niche that you choose because there is bound to be affiliate products that you can promote related to your niche.

There are hundreds of thousands of affiliate programs that exist. You will not run out of products to promote.

Amazon.com has an affiliate program called Amazon Associates. You can imagine the millions of products on that platform alone.

I Don’t Want to Be an Administrative Assistant Anymore – My Closing Thoughts

I hope that this post has provided you with an alternative way of generating income. Starting an online business is a great way to create a new stream of income.

Best of all, you have the choice to develop it into a full-time income. When I started my business, I wanted to start off on the right foot.

I didn’t want to spend a lot of time spinning my wheels trying to learn affiliate marketing on my own. I followed a step-by-step training program that I am still a part of today.

I recommend signing up for free and starting the lessons. You’ll get a full understanding of what I have covered here. I hope to meet you inside!
