How to Escape Working an Office Job Using a Blog to Earn Income Online

For some, working an office job is a dream come true, while for others it is a pure drudgery. I relate to the latter. I worked an office job as a web developer for close to a decade between various employers.

I wanted to escape so badly but the comfortability of a paycheck kept me complacent. That is until my last office job let the entire web department go. We were laid off and I had nothing to fall back on.

Today, I work for myself, from home and online. What I do can be duplicated by anyone that has a strong desire to escape working an office job to work for themselves. I’ll explain how in this post.

Why Start a Blog?

I began my escape from the rat race by creating a blog.

There are many ways in which you can earn income online, so why choose to create a blog? As for myself, it is one of the lowest-cost online businesses that you can start.

If you have $10 for a domain name and about $70 or so for a year’s worth of web hosting, you are in business.

Blogging is also convenient. You can work on your blog while you are still holding down an office job.

A blog is low maintenance. Your job is to create content on a regular basis but other than that, maintenance is very easy.

The most challenging part is actually sticking with it. This picture depicts what it is like to start a blog to earn income online:

don't quit

New blogs are started every single day and sadly, a bulk of them are abandoned due to the blog owners giving up before they give their blogs time to achieve success.

This is why it is important to create your plan and stick with it. Here is a sample plan of what I did when I started:

  • Perform keyword research
  • Create a list of 30 keyword phrases
  • Write 2 or 3 new blog posts per week
  • Share new posts on social media channels

You will learn a lot as you go along. However, investing in an online blogging course such as this one can definitely help speed up the learning process as well as get you to earning faster.

Getting Your Own Blog is Easy

Before you get your own blog, I recommend avoiding free blogging platforms. Free services are usually limited. They may limit you on web space and the ability to advertise.

Besides that, when you use free blogging services, you risk having your account closed at any time for any reason. That is because they have the authority to do so since you are using their service.

I do recommend registering your own domain name and installing WordPress for your blog. Don’t worry if all of that sounds foreign.

You do not need any special technical skill to get your own blog. Most commercial web hosting companies have one-click WordPress install.

For example, if you head over to Dreamhost (one of the web hosts that I use and WordPress recommended), you can get free domain registration on a yearly shared plan.

They also have WordPress one-click installation. You follow a few prompts and your new blog will be live and ready to use:

How Exactly Can You Make Money with a Blog?

Bloggers earn income with their blogs in a variety of ways. You can monetize your blog using methods such as:

  • Affiliate marketing
  • Display ads
  • CPA ads
  • Selling your own products or services

One of my favorite methods of earning with a blog is by using affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is the promotion of another company’s products or services in exchange for a commission when a sale is made.

In simpler terms, you refer products or services that will benefit your readers and you make money when someone buys that product or service.

There are TONS of affiliate programs that you can join. Joining an affiliate program is free. Beware of any that charge a fee to promote their products as an affiliate.

Many affiliate programs offer generous commissions. You can find commissions as high as 30% and more. This is why many bloggers are able to earn full-time incomes from their blogs.

I like affiliate marketing for various other reasons as well such as:

  • You don’t need your own product
  • You don’t have to ship anything
  • There is no customer service to handle
  • How much you can earn is unlimited
  • You can work from anywhere with an internet connection

Where to Find Affiliate Programs

You can find affiliate programs easily by doing a quick search. Major corporations have affiliate programs to include Amazon.com, Walmart, Target, and more.

You also have the option to join affiliate networks such as ShareASale. An affiliate network manages affiliate programs for various companies.

If I were to search online for a specific affiliate program, I would type in “keyword + affiliate program.”

Let’s say you started a blog in order to help people stop snoring. You could then search for snore product solutions that have an affiliate program.

I typed in “snore products affiliate program” and was returned these results:

snoring affiliates

How to Add Affiliate Products to Your Blog

The easiest way to promote affiliate products on your blog is by linking to them using the affiliate links provided by the program you’re signed up with.

You can write product reviews or simply recommend products within your blog posts. What I find to have the highest conversions is to recommend products that you have experience with.

It is much easier to promote a product or service that you actually use or know for certain will benefit your readers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Blogging and Making Money Online

Here are some of the most common questions that are asked in terms of earning income online with a blog.

How Long Does It Take to Make Money with a Blog?

  • I have written about this topic before but my answer is that it varies. It has a lot to do with the niche that you choose, how much content you can create, and how you monetize your blog. However, from my own experience and from what I’ve read from others, most bloggers begin making consistent income within a year.

What is the Best Niche to Start a Blog In?

  • I always recommend choosing a niche that you have a genuine interest in. The reason being that if you are the only one creating the content, it will be easier to do so since you like the topic. Otherwise, if you are stuck choosing a niche, you can always choose one under the evergreen niches: health, wealth, and relationships.

Should I Take a Blogging Course?

  • You do not need to invest in a blogging course to succeed. However, like anything that you want to become good at, it wouldn’t hurt to learn more about it. I’m constantly learning new things within the blogging/affiliate marketing world. That being said, a good blogging course such as this one can help speed up your learning curve.

In Conclusion

Creating a niche blog was one of the best things that I’ve done for myself and my family. Being able to work online has provided many benefits.

If you are working an office job and wanting to escape, blogging can provide a way to do so without a large investment. All that is really required is your time and not giving up.
