I’m an introvert and I never had a job that didn’t involve working in some form of a team environment.
Being around co-workers day-in and day-out can really drain your energy. I’ve had many days where I’d come home mentally exhausted from dealing with people.
The good news is that I work for myself and it doesn’t involve having clients, no customer service, no inventory, and no shipping and handling.
I work alone but I always have the option to socialize with other people in the same industry. As an introvert yourself, I’m sure this sounds exciting.
Read below for my self employment ideas for introverts, how I accomplish what I do, and how you can too.
Why Entrepreneurship for Introverts?
Being an introvert is actually advantageous when it comes to the two self-employment ideas I will share in this post.
There are many people who are dissatisfied with their jobs. For introverts, it is all too common.
Even if you enjoy what you do, the dynamic of a workplace can be extremely draining. I worked in a cubicle environment for nearly a decade.
There were many different personalities I worked with. Not only that, but there were many disgruntled clients as well.
I was not comfortable with dealing with clients but there were instances where I couldn’t avoid it. As an introvert, it was torturous for me.
When I was laid off, I vowed to not go back to a cubicle so I got a job that was completely opposite.
It was retail work but I went from working directly with customers to working behind the scenes. It was both mentally and physically draining.
During that time, I worked on one of the business ideas I am going to share below.
Thanks to the training I followed and my efforts, I am able to make a consistent income online.
Starting a Business for Introverts is Easier Than Ever
The two businesses I will share with you here can both be run on the internet. They are both very low-cost businesses to start.
Introverts can do extremely well with both of these online businesses.
The advantages of these two businesses include:
- No inventory to buy or store ever
- Unlimited earning potential
- Work from anywhere with an internet connection
- Low-cost to start
- No recruiting (don’t worry, it is not an MLM or network marketing)
Unlike a typical brick-and-mortar store, you do not have to locate and pay rent on a physical storefront.
Best of all, since you do not have to buy inventory, you can start your online business immediately.
Two Start-Up Businesses for Introverts That You Can Start Today
The two businesses I am referring to are affiliate marketing and dropshipping. I will explain what each is below.
This remains one of my favorite ways to generate income online. It is really an introvert’s dream career (in my opinion!).
Affiliate marketing is the process of promoting a company’s products or services for a commission when a sale is made.
You get started by joining what is called an “affiliate program.” There are hundreds of thousands of affiliate programs that you can join for free—Amazon.com being one of the largest.
Here is a flowchart of how affiliate marketing works:
What is awesome about affiliate marketing is that you do not need your own product to get started.
All that you need is to have a niche (topic) that you are interested in creating a website around.
For example, I love the topic of online businesses. Therefore, I write about that often on my blog.
You can create a niche website around anything you are passionate about and find tons of affiliate products related to your niche.
Any affiliate program that you join will provide you with special affiliate links that you can place on your website.
These links will keep track of any sales that are made from visitors clicking on those links.
Building niche affiliate websites was one of the best things that I’ve done. It is a lot of work up front but it pays off in the long run.
Nowadays you can speed up the process by having a custom niche website built for you. You can also purchase an aged niche website that is already indexed and ranking in the search engines.
This online business model differs from affiliate marketing in that you will need to use an eCommerce platform to get started.
How dropshipping works is by finding a dropship supplier and importing their products into your online store.
When a customer buys a product from your store, you pay the dropship supplier for the product and they ship the item directly to your customer.
Whatever the price difference is between what you charged the customer and what the dropship supplier charged you is your profit.
Here is an infographic of how it works:
Many people like to use Shopify for their dropshipping stores.
However, I think there is a better way to do dropshipping without Shopify.
It is a WordPress plugin that I use called AliDropship. There are multiple reasons why I prefer AliDropship over Shopify.
Reason #1: You Have 100% Ownership of Your Store
Since AliDropship is a WordPress plugin, you automatically retain 100% ownership of your store. You are not relying on another eCommerce platforms software.
For example, if you were to open your store on Shopify, you would not be able to take your store with you if you wanted to move it for any reason.
Reason #2: No Monthly Fees
Other eCommerce platforms and apps charge a monthly fee to use their services.
If you were to use Shopify and Oberlo for your dropshipping store, you would pay around $60 a month (on their basic plans.)
There are no monthly fees associated with using the AliDropship plugin.
Reason #3: AliDropship Sources Products from AliExpress
You do not have to worry about finding a dropship supplier because AliDropship enables you to import products into your store from AliExpress.com.
AliExpress is a huge online retailer whose merchants are primarily in China. Most of the merchants are accustomed to dealing with dropshippers.
Their prices are often so low that you can mark up your items five or ten times and still offer an amazing value to your customers.
Other Self Employment Ideas for Introverts
There are other self-employment opportunities that you can pursue that may be ideal for introverts.
Here are some ideas:
- Freelance writer
- Web designer
- Graphic designer
- Dog walker
- Pet sitter
- eBook author
- Virtual assistant
- Errand service
- Flipping thrift store items
While some of the self-employment opportunities above are great ideas, as an introvert, I still prefer an online business.
An online business provides a lot of opportunity without the high start-up costs associated with other types of businesses.
If you want to get started with affiliate marketing, I recommend creating a niche affiliate website or investing in a ready-made niche website.
Keep in mind that affiliate marketing usually takes more time to grow and earn income from. However, once you have reached success, your earnings are often cumulative.
Dropshipping can earn profits much faster by placing ads on Facebook, Instagram, or using PPC (pay-per-click) ads.
In order to save on expenses, I recommend using AliDropship.
The money that you save can be put towards your advertising budget. I hope that these two self-employment ideas for introverts have sparked some interest.
Even if you are working full-time already, both of these ideas can be implemented on the side. Many successful online business owners have started off this way.
I recommend reading some dropshipping success stories on the AliDropship blog.
To your success!
