5 Beginner Blogging Mistakes When Making Money Online

beginner blogging mistakes

I’ve started many blogs in the past and only had partial success with two of them.

Looking back, each blog I started definitely had potential.

However, I was notorious for making the same mistakes over and over again. Particularly mistakes number 2, 3, and 5 below.

When your focus is to make money online through blogging, you will want to avoid making common blogging mistakes that could hinder your progress.

I’ve wasted a lot of time and effort in the past. I will share what these beginner blogging mistakes are so that you can save yourself time and make more money.

1. Using Free Blogging Services

I always recommend that serious bloggers avoid using free blogging services such as Blogger, Tumblr, etc. This is because you have limited control of your content.

For example, what happens if your blog is taken down or the service goes out of business?

You also have very limited options on how you can advertise on a free service. Some blogging services do not allow affiliate marketing links or banner ads.

You are always better off buying your own domain name, web hosting, and installing WordPress. If all of that sounds over your head, start off with a free site at SiteRubix.

It is run by Wealthy Affiliate and does not have the limitations you will find with other free blogging services. You can always transition to your own domain easily using the WA web hosting service.

2. Choosing a Topic You Have Very Little Interest In

As mentioned above, this was one of the mistakes I’d make almost every time I created a new blog. I chose topics based on their money-making potential rather than my genuine interest.

This led to many blogs I’d start off excited about only to end in an abandoned blog after about a month or two. It was a waste of time and money.

Now I choose niches (topics) that I have a real interest in. This helps to ensure that I won’t get burned out on writing about the topic I’ve chosen.

When you are the only person writing content for your blog, you want to be sure it is a topic you are passionate about. Otherwise, it will be like pulling teeth to want to continue writing.

If you are stuck on how to choose a topic (niche), try making a list of everything that interests you.  It is possible to make money online in just about any niche.

3. Lack of Keyword Research

It is important to write high-quality, helpful content for your audience. However, you can still use keyword research to help you write search engine optimized blog posts.

Keywords are essential for obtaining organic web traffic. I don’t write a blog post without doing some keyword research first.

In the past, I wrote a lot based on my own questions about a specific topic. In other words, I was guessing as to what to write. I had no idea if the keywords I chose were getting any search traffic.

Although keyword research can be done for free using Google’s Keyword Planner, I prefer using a good keyword tool such a Jaaxy.

I like using Jaaxy because it is easy to use and understand. If the keyword I am researching is under 300 QSR and has a high enough monthly search, it is worth targeting.

Doing proper keyword research can help you write blog posts that will eventually be indexed in the search engines and ranked well enough to drive organic traffic to your blog.

It is an awesome feeling when your blog posts and pages begin to rank in the search engines. That means you get real visitors who may enjoy your articles and will possibly buy from one of your affiliate links.

4. Not Writing On a Consistent Basis

Content is what makes your blog a blog. When you don’t write on a consistent basis, search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo! will not crawl your website.

When your website is not being crawled, your pages are not being indexed in the search engines. One of the best ways to let the search engines know that your blog is an authority website is by writing good content often.

It helps to choose a writing schedule and stick to it. If you can write 2 to 3 blog posts per week, then do your best to stick to that schedule.

I have a full-time job so I try to do most of my writing on my days off. Yes, it is a lot of work, but I treat my blog like a business.

That means I am consistently keeping my blog filled with helpful content.

5. Giving Up On Your Blog

This was a huge mistake that I’ve made so many times. I’d start a blog, write consistently for about a month or two, only to give up by the third month because no income was being made.

The reality is that it can take anywhere from 6-months to a year before you make your first sale. For some bloggers, it can happen sooner than later. For others, it can take a year or longer to make a consistent income.

Regardless, a year is not a long time to wait when it comes to your own online business. Think of how long you’ve worked for current and past employers.

Probably years, right? Don’t make the mistake of giving up on your blog. I learned this valuable lesson (among many others) after becoming a member of Wealthy Affiliate.
