I remember when I got my first affiliate commission. It was an amazing feeling. Even today I am excited every time a sale is made.
To me, the feeling never gets old! As a new affiliate, you are probably eager to make your first commission.
While there is a myriad of ways to earn an affiliate commission, I will show you a tried and true way to earn your first affiliate payment.
Why Your First Affiliate Commission is So Important
The very first affiliate commission you ever make will be the most significant because as a new affiliate it will serve as proof to yourself that affiliate marketing works.
It won’t matter how small the commission is. Even if you’ve only made $0.30 cents, that is money you’ve earned with your marketing skills.
Another reason your first commission is significant is that if you can make one sale, you can make another, and another, and so on.
Every sale will boost your confidence. In the beginning, it may seem like earning your first commission is impossible.
That is why what I share in this post will work if you stick with it.
The Method I Use to Earn a Consistent Income Online
I use content marketing to promote affiliate products. I create niche websites (blogs) and write content to target a specific audience.
This method is considered a slow method compared to paid advertising but it works well once your content begins to rank in the search engines.
A new affiliate usually has more time than money so PPC (pay per click) advertising is usually out of the question.
Besides that, there is a larger learning curve when it comes to paid advertising. Content marketing also has a learning curve but it is much easier to grasp and free to do.
Step 1: Picking a Niche That You Can Monetize
A niche is simply a topic that a group of people is interested in. Niches are everywhere but it is important to choose a niche that you can earn income with.
For the most part, I always recommend choosing a niche that you have a genuine interest in. Why? The reason is that you will be creating a lot of content for your website.
Unless you can afford to outsource your content creation, it is better to stick to a niche that you know you can write about on a consistent basis.
There are some things to keep in mind when choosing a niche. It helps to figure out the types of affiliate products that you want to promote.
I try to promote products that I use myself. That is important to me because I like to recommend products that have helped me and that I know will help my readers.
What to Avoid When Choosing a Niche
Being Too Broad
It helps to not choose a niche that is too broad. For example, I created a fitness blog many years ago to help motivate myself to lose weight and get fit.
That blog eventually generated 1,000+ visitors a day but it made very little income. My topic was very broad and lacked any type of focus.
One day I’d blog about a workout and another I’d blog about a fitness program I liked. People that visited often clicked away immediately because they didn’t find what they were looking for.
When you choose a niche, try to be specific and think about how best to monetize it. Some niches that are quite popular and easy to monetize include:
- Parenting (mommy blogs, dad blogs)
- Personal finance (getting out of debt)
- Personal development
- Home decor
- Health & fitness (choose a sub-niche)
Focusing On One Product
You can find some success with focusing on one product such as this football snack helmet website.
This website brings in a consistent income as an Amazon affiliate website because of the keywords it targets. However, it is also difficult to create a lot of content for this niche.
If the owner wanted to, he could create a football related website such as focusing on college teams or one specific NFL team, etc.
Then he would have more keywords to target and more products to promote as an affiliate.
Step 2: Creating a Niche Blog
Website creation is simple and easy thanks to free website platforms like WordPress.com.
An even easier solution is to find a web hosting service that offers one-click WordPress installation. Most of them offer this including SiteGround, my web hosting provider of choice.
Step 3: Generate Free Web Traffic
You have picked out your niche. You’ve created your website (blog). Now it is time to begin generating traffic.
We do this through the use of content creation. Creating content means writing articles for your website based around your niche.
I always begin all of my articles by first doing keyword research.
Keyword research helps me write an article that I know people are searching for. That should be your goal with each piece of content that you create.
The more content that you create, the more articles that will rank in the search engines over time. In time, your website will begin to generate free and targeted web traffic.
Here is an example of how content creation works. My blog currently ranks #2 for the term “I don’t want to work in an office”:
I repeat the same process each time I create a new post. I search for long-tail keywords with low competition and a decent monthly search volume.
Step 4: Earn a Consistent Income Online
Earning income from your niche blog can be done in a variety of ways. However, sticking to the tried and true method, we will monetize using affiliate products.
There are hundreds of thousands of affiliate programs. You should have no problem finding one (or more) regardless of your niche.
Many new affiliates start out by joining the Amazon Associates affiliate program.
Amazon has millions of products on its website so there is no shortage of products that you can promote as an affiliate.
If you blog consistently, the following is quite possible:
- 3 months in = a few sales
- 6 months in = $0-$500 per month
- 12+ months in = $1,000-$5,000 per month
Those numbers are a rough estimate. It varies depending upon your own individual efforts. Some people manage to make more or less in varying amounts of time.
As mentioned earlier, these four steps are easy but they take a lot of patience and consistent effort.
If I had given up when I felt frustrated, I wouldn’t be where I am today in terms of earning a consistent income online.
The key is to follow a blueprint for earning income online and not giving up.
