Trying to figure out which hosting provider to go with when starting a new blog can be overwhelming. I am no web hosting expert but I have used several different service providers over the years.
I have had to switch providers for one reason or another and there are certain things I look for before choosing a service. I’ll share some of my tips for how to choose a web hosting service as a new blogger.
Affordability – How to Choose a Web Hosting Service On a Budget
Most commercial hosting providers are similar in terms of what they offer. You have your shared hosting plans, WordPress optimized plans, VPS (virtual private servers), dedicated servers and more.
For a new blogger, you’ll want to focus on either a shared plan or a WordPress optimized plan. Since you’ll likely be using WordPress, I’d go for a WordPress optimized plan as they are not that much more expensive than a shared plan.
Some web hosting providers are extremely reasonable in price. However, there are some that are a bit more expensive.
For example, you can get started with a hosting plan from HostGator for as little as $3.95 per month. Then there is WPEngine which starts at $35 per month. That’s a huge difference in price.
If you are on a budget, an affordable plan will do just fine. As a beginner, you do not have to start off with a higher-end hosting service. You can always switch hosting providers later if you want.
Test Out Their Customer Support
Another way that I narrow down my search for a good web hosting provider is by testing out the customer support for the service I am interested in.

There are too many services to choose from not to have around-the-clock customer support. The next thing you can do is to ask a simple question regarding a feature they offer.

I always look for the ability to contact customer support via live chat, phone, and email ticketing. I like having the option to contact someone through all three channels.
I’ve experienced very poor customer support with a past hosting provider and the only way I could reach them was by email. It was extremely frustrating as my website was displaying blank pages and I couldn’t speak with someone directly.
You do not want to experience that. That is why having customer support by phone, email, and live chat 24/7 is so important.
Two Web Hosting Service Providers I Use Today
You may be wondering why in the world do I use multiple hosting providers? It is something that I’ve done for many years.
Although web hosting services have come a long way and it is rare that any of my websites experience downtime, I do like to keep some of my websites separated in the event one hosting provider does experience issues.
Besides that, I often catch really good deals during the holiday sales so it gives me the opportunity to take advantage and test out another hosting service as well.
As mentioned earlier, I have used several different web hosts throughout the years. I currently use two different providers at the moment and I like each of them so much that I have no problem recommending either of them.
When I was dealing with the last hosting provider that I used and the terrible customer support they provided, I came across SiteGround as a recommendation on a blog that I follow.
I checked out their pricing plans and tested out their customer support. I didn’t wait any longer than a minute for someone to pop-up in the live chat. After creating an account, I did need to contact support again.
Again, a short wait and my issue was fixed within minutes. I’ve had no issues with their service thus far and I am so happy with how well their customer support works.

If you ever need to switch hosting providers in the future, it is typically an easy and painless process. Most hosting providers will transfer your WordPress website for you usually without charging a fee.
I have a background in web and have always transferred my websites myself. I have switched between many hosting providers throughout the years and haven’t had any issues.
Web hosting companies are plentiful. So much so that it almost makes it impossible to choose one. Hopefully some of my tips above can help you to narrow down to a couple of options.

- Choose WordPress optimized hosting if available
