This post is for anyone who is just starting out with learning about affiliate marketing and for those who feel like they are stuck.

I’ve been there and I’ve made a lot of mistakes. If someone were to ask me how to make money from affiliate marketing, this is exactly what I would tell them.

I’m not an expert by any means. I have made money using affiliate marketing off and on for years. I have enough experience to save a beginner from making mistakes that waste time and money.

Fortunately, I have stopped my cycle of mistakes and I’m finally on the right track with my online business.

Keep reading to help minimize your learning curve and learn how to get started in the most efficient way possible.

Choose One Way to Make Money with Affiliate Marketing and Stick with It

internet marketing strategy

Back when I was teaching myself about affiliate marketing, I jumped from one thing to the next hoping I would land on the big payoff.

This is what is referred to as “shiny object syndrome” and it is common with new affiliate marketers.

You come across someone’s blog who is making money online and you read every word to learn how they’ve done it.

After implementing what they’ve done and not getting results fast enough, you then find someone else and follow their method.

Soon you begin buying products that claim you can make money with very little work. After awhile, you’ve found that you’ve spent hundreds (even worse thousands) of dollars on products that don’t work.

If you come across a method of making money with affiliate marketing that you like, stick with it.

The key is knowing what will be a long-term method and what methods are shortcuts (likely scams) that are fly-by-night.

Red Flags to Look Out for When it Comes to Internet Marketing Scams

It’s easy for me to spot internet marketing scams. As you learn more about affiliate marketing, you’ll begin to easily recognize scams as well.

For now, here is a list of red flags to look out for:

The Product is Super Cheap

Beware of products that are very affordable, usually in the $6 and under range. Once you buy these products you are then bombarded with OTOs (one-time offers), upsells, downsells, and everything in between to have you spend more money.

Overhyped and Unrealistic Claims

If there is a lot of hype and claims of making money easily with very little work, it is probably a scam. Any business venture takes time to grow, even if it is on the internet. An online business does not equate to faster profit. Anything that claims fast money is likely too good to be true.

Product and/or Product Creator Has Bad Reviews

It’s always good to read reviews of the product you are interested in before buying. A lot of times the product itself or the product creator has some negative reviews you should be aware of. Keep in mind that many affiliates of the product will provide glowing reviews to get you to buy. Look for objective reviews before making a decision.

Sales Page Displays Exotic Sports Cars and Party Atmosphere

Many times scammy product creators will create sales pages that cater to people’s desire for fast money. They’ll show themselves driving sports cars, partying in Las Vegas, and so on. It’s a marketing tactic and legitimate products and services rarely if ever, promote their products in this way.

Be Cautious About Using PPC to Promote Affiliate Products

Some affiliate marketers do very well with using PPC (pay-per-click) ads for promoting affiliate products.

However, there is a HUGE learning curve when using PPC and it can cost a lot of money. Even the most experienced internet marketers started with a sizeable budget when using PPC.

Some have started with $500 a month while others devoted their life savings. Yes, PPC is a faster way to earning online but it is not easy or cheap.

A much easier way (albeit slower and far less risky) to get started with affiliate marketing is by creating niche websites.

Why I Chose to Use Niche Websites and Why You Should Too

thought bubble

If fast money is what you’re after, don’t bother with building a niche website.

However, if you’re looking for a long-term, legitimate way of building an online business, then niche websites is an awesome way to do it.

Yes, it is a slower way to make money online but like anything worthwhile, it takes time to grow and develop.

The best part is that once your niche website gets going (ranking in the search engines), all of the traffic you receive is free.

What is a Niche Website?

A niche is simply a group of people that share an interest. Niches are everywhere. Being new parents is a niche. Flying kites is a niche. Healthy cooking is a niche.

In short, there are tons of niches and you likely have an interest in several niches of your own.

Niche websites are extremely low-cost to create. All that you need to get started is your own domain name, a WordPress website, and web hosting.

You can get started for under $100 in most cases and if you want, you can even get started for free using SiteRubix.

It always helps to stay in the know and I do that with the ongoing training inside of Wealthy Affiliate.
