I remember when I first discovered affiliate marketing. I was amazed that people were able to earn income online without investing in inventory or dealing with customer service.
Back then, I did a lot of online research trying to figure out the best way to learn affiliate marketing.
It is no different for new affiliate marketers today. So, if you are searching for the best way to learn, I’ve created this beginners guide for affiliate marketing newbies.
My Beginners Guide for Affiliate Marketing Newcomers
In this brief guide, I will explain how to best start with affiliate marketing based on my own personal experience.
It is my hope that this guide will save you some time and money in the long run.
The cycle that many new affiliate marketers fall into is buying one program after another that teaches how to make money online.
They lose their direction and start multiple projects without finishing any of them. Therefore, no progress is being made.
What is Affiliate Marketing?
This may be something you already know but in case you are extremely new to affiliate marketing, here is a definition:
Affiliate marketing is simply promoting a company’s products or services in exchange for a percentage of the sale (commission) when someone makes a purchase using your affiliate link.
There are many benefits to affiliate marketing compared to the other methods of selling online. Here are some of my favorites:
- No inventory to buy
- No products to ship
- No customer service
- Tons of affiliate programs to choose from
- Affiliate programs are free to join
- Potential to provide lifestyle freedom
- Unlimited earning potential
First Focus on One Method to Make Money
Starting off in affiliate marketing as a beginner can feel overwhelming with the variety of ways in which you can make money online.
As a new affiliate marketer, my biggest piece of advice is to start off with your own niche website.
Why a niche website? This is because it is one of the easiest and lowest cost ways to get started as an affiliate.
Otherwise, you could end up spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars on PPC (pay-per-click) advertising or other traffic sources.
As a new affiliate, it is likely that you do not have a ton of cash to work with. Starting with a niche website has many benefits:
- You learn how to create and maintain a website
- You learn valuable SEO (search engine optimization) skills
- You learn how to generate free organic web traffic
- You learn how to write content with intent to convert readers into buyers
- You learn how to make money with various affiliate programs
Don’t worry if the thought of building an actual website intimidates you. There is a learning curve but it is easy if you can follow step-by-step instructions.
I learned most of what I know from personal research.
Create Your Niche Website
You can’t make any money online without first establishing your very own website. Creating your own website no longer requires any technical knowledge.
In fact, there are free website services all over the internet. Yet, I don’t recommend most of them because there is almost always a fee involved in order to advertise on your website.
Avoid Shiny Object Syndrome
This is a trap that many new affiliate marketers fall into. Once you become aware that it is possible to make a living online, you seek out other ways in which to do so.
Eventually, you will find product after product promoting easy ways to make money online. Unfortunately, many of these internet marketing products are scams.
Another issue with finding these products is that you may end up buying them, trying their strategies, and abandoning them when you don’t get fast results.
This leads to buying another product because this one has to work and again, no results and you move on.
It is not uncommon to hear of people who have paid hundreds, if not thousands of dollars into various internet marketing scams.
Save yourself a lot of time and money by focusing on one method first. This is why niche websites work well.
There is very little risk but a huge payoff if you stick with it. Earning a living online doesn’t happen overnight regardless of which strategy you choose.
However, as a new affiliate, I highly recommend sticking to one method, make your first few commissions, and grow from there.
Although this is a brief beginners guide for affiliate marketing, it is still helpful in terms of the key elements needed to get started as a new affiliate.
I wanted to ensure that I got to the point of what is important and what to avoid. This guide is essentially what I would share with anyone who asks me how to become an affiliate marketer.
I wish you much success with your online endeavors! Feel free to ask questions or to share your experience below in the comments.
