Becoming an affiliate marketer is as simple as joining an affiliate program.
However, in order to make a consistent income online, there are several things you’ll want to do.
Making money online requires marketing. One of the fastest and easiest ways to start promoting affiliate products is by having a website of your own.
I’ll explain the four things you need to start affiliate marketing.
What is Affiliate Marketing?
For those that may not know, affiliate marketing is the promotion of another company’s products or services in exchange for a commission when a sale is made.
Affiliate programs are free to join and some pay up to 80% commission when a sale is made. When you have your own website, you can place your affiliate links (provided by your affiliate program) within your copy.
As visitors click on your affiliate links, it sets a cookie in their browser for tracking purposes.
Some affiliate programs set their cookies anywhere from 30 to 90 days. Meaning that if a visitor makes a purchase anytime within the cookie length, you’ll still get the credit.
There are some affiliate programs with much shorter cookies. For example, Amazon.com’s affiliate program has a 24-hour cookie length.

You’ll Need a Niche
A niche is a group of people who are interested in the same thing. There are TONS of niches to choose from.
Think of some of your hobbies or interests. Like the photo above, I also have an interest in playing the ukulele.
If I wanted to, I could choose that as my niche. I could create my niche website around everything related to playing the ukulele.
I would then write helpful content that other people who enjoy the ukulele may be searching for such as:
- best ukulele beginner
- best strings ukulele
- ukulele tutorials beginners
- best brands ukuleles
- beginner ukulele lessons
- best ukulele songs beginners
- where can I buy ukulele
All of the keyword phrases above are very low competition and have a decent monthly search. As I create content around these topics, I can monetize my website using affiliate links.
For example, if I were to sign up with the Amazon Associates affiliate program, I could post images of specific ukuleles with my affiliate links.
When visitors land on my website and click any of my affiliate links pertaining to the ukulele, I will get a percentage of the sale when they make a purchase.
You’ll Need a Website
Long gone are the days of needing to hire a web developer to get your website up and running. There are a lot more options for getting a website up in which you can do yourself.
No technical skill is required. I build my niche websites using a free niche site building software called, SiteRubix.
It is the website platform inside of Wealthy Affiliate. It uses WordPress to create your website.
The best part is that when you create your niche website using SiteRubix, you also become a free starter member of Wealthy Affiliate.
Wealthy Affiliate is an online business training course/community. I owe my current success to what I’ve learned and continue to learn there.
Creating useful content is what will attract targeted visitors to your website. Over time, your articles will rank highly in the search engines.
Essentially is SEO (search engine optimization). Content creation involves doing longtail keyword research.
Before I write any article, I do keyword research using the Jaaxy keyword tool.
By doing longtail keyword research, I can find low competition keywords that still have high monthly searches.
This gives me a much higher chances of my articles ranking well in the search engine result pages. I wrote a post about how long articles should be on your website.
I try to shoot for over 1,000 words. If I don’t surpass that, it’s not a big deal either. For me, what’s more important is that I write a helpful post.
Monetization – Join Affliate Programs
This what every affiliate marketer enjoys most. Monetizing your website is important if you want to make any money.
There are other ways to monetize your website besides using affiliate marketing. However, affiliate marketing remains one of my favorite monetization methods.
There is more to monetization than simply posting affiliate links. Writing helpful content helps to attract targeted visitors.
However, if you do not know how to convert your visitors, it will be difficult to make any money online.
I learned how to write for conversions from the training I followed in Wealthy Affiliate. In fact, I owe all of my progress to the training, tools, and support I have there.
When you are serious about learning your business, you have to invest in your education.
You already have everything you need to start affiliate marketing today. You have the interest and desire. Now you need the tools and training.
