Some retired individuals must continue to work to supplement their retirement income. I know this for a fact because I personally know of some retired folks who must work in order to survive.
The income they are making from a pension is not enough to make ends meet. The most obvious answer is to find a job. However, getting a job is not always feasible for some retirees.
Regardless of why you need to supplement your retirement income, I will share the exact steps that anyone can take to create supplemental income from home using the internet.

Why Use the Internet to Generate Supplemental Income?
For one thing, the internet is convenient. Some of the retired people I know are not working ideal jobs. They are working jobs in which they are on their feet all day.
These types of jobs are typically retail jobs or other serviced based jobs. Standing on your feet all day can take a toll on the body. Your legs, feet, and sometimes even your back may throb from these jobs.
When you run an online business, you can work from home or anywhere that has an internet connection. This frees up your time to spend with your loved ones and to do the fun things you dreamed of doing when you initially retired.
What Exactly Would You Be Doing Online?
You would create and build your very own niche website based around a topic that you enjoy. It is easier than you think! In fact, you can have your website up in less than 30 seconds.
Your website will serve as the foundation of your business. You will be able to write, review, and talk about everything related to your topic.
The three steps below will go into more detail of what it takes to supplement your retirement income by using the internet.
Step 1 – Narrow Down Your Interests
The great thing about building a niche website is that you can create it on a topic that you have a genuine interest in.
A niche is basically a subgroup of a broader topic. For example, here are some broad topics that you may have an interest in:
- Health & Fitness
- Personal Finance
Broad topics are very competitive. If you chose to build a health and fitness website, it would be difficult to rank your website for specific keyword phrases.
However, if you niche out your topics, it is much easier to rank your web pages for certain keywords. Here is the list above revamped into targeted niches:
- How to lose weight after 40 (Health & Fitness)
- Maintain a garden in a small space (Gardening)
- Improve your golf swing (Golf)
- How to live frugally (Personal Finance)
- Dog training (Pets)
Notice how the niches are very targeted to a specific audience. Rather than build a website that discusses general health and fitness topics, you are targeting people who are over 40 years of age.
Gardening is a broad topic but not if you target people who need help with gardening in a small space. The same goes for golf. Improving one’s golf swing is a topic many golfers would love to learn about.
The idea is that whatever niche you choose, ensure it is one that you can write about on a regular basis. Remember, the goal of your website is to provide high-quality and helpful information to your readers.
Create a list of topics that interest you the most. Then break down each of those topics into a more specific topic. Niche selection is a critical part of building your website.
If it all still seems a little confusing, don’t worry. Step 3 below will take care of everything.
Step 2 – Get Your Free Website
After selecting your niche, it is time to get your website up. I personally build all of my websites using WordPress.
Chances are, you may not have the first clue as to how to get a website up and running, let alone how to use WordPress.
A website consists of a domain name, web hosting, and the website itself (WordPress). Most of this is very technical for the average person.
I highly recommend setting up your website using the SiteRubix platform. It is free and extremely easy to use. All you need to do is follow the prompts and your free website will be up in less than 30 seconds.
Best of all, once you have your account on SiteRubix, you also have access to some of the best free online entrepreneur training around. Read Step 3 to learn more.
Step 3 – Get Your Free Online Entrepreneur Training
Having your website up is the first step to creating your online business. The next step is to learn how to monetize your website and market your website so that you get web traffic (actual visitors.)
Monetizing your website is the method in which you will make money. The method I use and what many online entrepreneurs use is affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing is simply promoting a company’s products or services in exchange for a percentage of the sale (commission) when someone makes a purchase using your affiliate link.
The flowchart below is an example of how affiliate marketing works:
You can learn how to put it all together for free inside of Wealthy Affiliate. I joined Wealthy Affiliate as a free starter member and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in terms of learning how to build an online business.
I am a premium member now and I continue to learn about this business as my websites earn money online. The community is awesome, the training is top-notch, and I never feel stuck.
If I have a question, it is answered in a timely manner. I will always be grateful for what I’ve learned at Wealthy Affiliate.
No matter the reason why you want to supplement your retirement income, it is possible to do so using the internet.
Getting a job is not always the best option for many retirees. With some hard work, consistent effort, and the proper training, there is no reason why you cannot build a successful online business.
