Review of Menya Ultra – The Best Ramen House in San Diego

My sister is a true foodie so I knew Menya Ultra was going to be the spot for ramen since she couldn’t stop talking about it.

There are a lot of great Asian restaurants located in Kearny Mesa and I’ve had great ramen at other Japanese restaurants.

Tajima is one place that comes to mind. However, Menya Ultra’s ramen is something special.

Tonkotsu Ramen in San Diego

tonkotsu ramen

Tonkotsu ramen is my favorite type of ramen. I’m not a ramen expert by any means but I love tonkotsu broth. It is simply delicious.

A little bit of background on Menya Ultra. The founder and owner, Takashi Endo chose San Diego for his first U.S. location. He has several other ramen shops in Japan.

The noodles for Menya Ultra are handmade using a recipe that the owner developed 18 years ago. The restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays to prep both the broth and noodles.

Paiko Cold Tantan Men

This dish is served cold and is just as delicious as the hot version. In fact, the next time I visit Menya Ultra, I will be ordering Paiko Cold Tantan Men.

Gyoza Side Dish

Gyoza is one of the side dishes we always order and it is tasty. It is served hot and fresh. If you enjoy a good bowl of ramen, you really can’t go wrong at Menya Ultra.

The Best Ramen House in San Diego?

According to all of the positive Yelp reviews, Menya Ultra is on course for being one of the best ramen houses in San Diego.

It has even garnered a visit from tv personality, Andrew Zimmern for an episode of The Zimmern List for the Travel Channel.

Final Notes

Keep in mind that there is a bit of a wait if you do not arrive early and get your name on the waiting list.

Each time we have visited, there is a crowd of people outside waiting to get in. Don’t let this deter you.

Try to get there when they open and the wait shouldn’t be too long. Overall, I think you will enjoy the food. The ramen is delicious and definitely worth the wait.
