I had first learned of doTERRA when a family member gave me some of their essential oils to use for aromatherapy.

Although I was quite impressed by the products, once I learned that it was a multi-level marketing company, my first question was “Is doTERRA Essential Oils a Scam?

In my review below, I’ll share my personal experience and whether I feel this company is a scam or not.

Name: doTERRA
Price: Varies between products (anywhere from $18 to $37 and up)
Owners: David Stirling

doTERRA Overview

The doTERRA Products

The doTERRA company is a multi-level marketing company that specializes in essential oils, skin care, supplements, and weight management products.

They are most popularly known for their essential oils product line. I have used some of the essential oils and they are really top quality. My favorite essential oils are the bergamot and peppermint oils.

I’m also a fan of their Deep Blue® Rub which I’ve used for muscle tightness and soreness in my neck, shoulders, and back.

Most multi-level marketing companies do a great job in creating really high-quality products. doTERRA is no different. From what I’ve used thus far, they are excellent products.

The doTERRA Business Opportunity

When you become an independent distributor of doTERRA you are referred to as a Wellness Advocate.

Like a typical multi-level marketing company, money is earned when you recruit people to join your downline.

On the doTERRA website, they recommend sharing the products by hosting an event. It can be a teaching event in which you talk about how essentials oils work.

You then follow up with the people who attended your event in order to obtain them as new customers or enroll them as a Wellness Advocate into your downline.

Another method developed by the company to share the products is by becoming certified in their AromaTouch® Technique.

It is a lightweight version of massage in which oil is applied using light touching. The main areas that are involved include the upper back, ears, and feet.

This is used not only to introduce essential oils to someone new but as a form of stress relief.

The Pros and the Cons

The Pros:

  • High-quality products
  • Business opportunity
  • A variety of ways in which to share the products
  • Healing Hands Foundation (non-profit organization)

The Cons:

  • Products are expensive
  • Multi-level marketing (recruiting people)
  • Involves sales (products and business opportunity)
  • You’re likely to spend more than you make
  • Low success rate

Who is doTERRA For?

A majority of people who sign up with doTERRA do so to buy their products at a discounted price.

According to the company’s 2015 earnings disclosure, 85% of people join for the product discounts and 15% join for the business opportunity.

I am not surprised at the percentage of people who join simply for the discounts. The essential oils are awesome and they work.

Ever since I was introduced to the essential oils, I’ve been using them on an almost daily basis. I do believe that essential oils are a great product to build a business around.

doTERRA Tools & Training

There is some brief training information on the doTERRA website for Wellness Advocates. I don’t doubt that more detailed training is available once you are enrolled as an independent distributor.

You’ll likely receive most if not all of the training you’ll need from the person who sponsors you. That is usually how most multi-level marketing companies work.

How Much Does doTERRA Cost to Become a Wellness Advocate?

You can enroll as a doTERRA Wellness Advocate by paying $35 or by purchasing any of the product enrollment kits.

When you purchase an enrollment kit, the $35 enrollment fee is waived.

There are a variety of enrollment kits to choose from all ranging in price. The most expensive kit is labeled as The Diamond Kit and is priced at $2,500.

My Final Opinion of doTERRA

is doterra a scam

In my opinion, doTERRA essential oils is not a scam. The company has really high-quality products and they offer the business opportunity in the form of multi-level marketing.

I am not a huge fan of multi-level marketing. Many people have found success with it and have managed to create full-time incomes from it.

However, after trying multi-level marketing, I have found that the success rate is quite low for most people.

If you read the earnings disclosure for almost any multi-level marketing company, you will notice that only a small percentage of distributors make a full-time income.

Take a look at doTERRA’s earnings disclosure and you’ll notice the following stats:

2015 Average Annual Earnings Disclosure

  • $26,600 a year – 62%
  • $59,000 a year – 23%
  • $115,000 a year – 5%
  • $205,000 a year – 7%
  • $462,000 a year – 2%
  • $1,353,000 – <1%

A Potentially Better Way to Earn Income

network marketing

Many people do not like multi-level marketing because of the recruiting.

You may have even been approached by someone who was attempting to recruit you into their own downline and was turned off by the process.

Those who are successful in multi-level marketing will tell you that it took a lot of hard work. It is really a numbers game. The more people you contact, the higher the chance you’ll recruit new people onto your team.

Once you’ve exhausted your friends, family, and acquaintances list, your only option is complete strangers. It can be nerve-wracking to approach strangers with your MLM business.

Not only that, but recruiting is a non-stop process. This is because many of the people you do manage to recruit will likely quit because they will find it difficult to recruit people as well.

Therefore, you will be dealing with a high turnover rate. Retaining people in your downline takes a lot of work and that is why you’ll have to constantly recruit for quite some time.

Why I Chose an Online Business vs an MLM

An online business doesn’t require all of the things typical of most businesses. There are no products to buy, nothing to ship, no customer service, and best of all, NO RECRUITING!

My online business consists of a website that revolves around my passion. That means that I earn income online doing something that I truly enjoy.

Here is a quick visual of how it works:

This online business method is also referred to as affiliate marketing. It is a very simple process but there are key elements that need to be learned.

A simple way to explain it would be:

Affiliate marketing is simply promoting a company’s products or services in exchange for a percentage of the sale (commission) when someone makes a purchase using your affiliate link.

I’ve learned everything about my online business inside of Wealthy Affiliate’s online business training course.

I started out as a free member and became a premium member the very next day. What I’ve learned is invaluable and has made a huge difference in how I run my business.

Why You Should Start an Online Business Today

You likely have an interest in starting your own side business. You can do so based around whatever interests you.

Regardless of what your passion is, you can make money from it. There are 3.2 billion people online. You only need a very small percentage of those people to make a full-time income.

I recommend you read my Wealthy Affiliate FAQ page and learn more about how it works.
