Although Shopify is widely used and extremely popular among dropshippers, it isn’t the best solution for everyone.

The service has awesome features, additional apps for more functionality, and is easy for anyone to use. However, there is also a monthly fee and fees for other apps to improve the functionality of your store.

In this post, I’ll explain what I realized about using the service as well as the pros and cons of using Shopify for your dropshipping store.

Why Use Shopify for Drophipping?

When I became interested in dropshipping, Shopify was one of the first places I considered. The reason being is that I wanted to use AliExpress as my dropshipping supplier.

At the time, I had read about using Oberlo and Shopify to import products from AliExpress.

I signed up for Shopify’s 14-day free trial and opened up a dropshipping store to test things out.

Overall, I felt the platform was really easy to use. I had no problem updating the settings, creating pages, and adding products.

I connected my store to Oberlo so that I could import products easily from AliExpress into my store.

One thing I had to look up was how to create drop-down menus in the main navigation of my store. After a quick search, I found a video tutorial on the Shopify site which was easy to follow.

Pros of Using Shopify for Your Dropshipping Store

working online

Customizable Store and Blog

I used one of the free themes during my trial period. It was really easy to customize it. The admin area is user-friendly so adding images in the key areas of your theme is easy to do. They also include a blog which is important for SEO purposes.

Easily Accept Credit Cards

One thing I really liked about Shopify was not having to worry about setting up any payment gateways. It already has the capabilities to accept credit cards and PayPal.

Sell On Multiple Sales Channels

One cool thing about Shopify is the ability to sell on other social media platforms such as Facebook and Pinterest. You can also connect your store to Amazon and eBay (in the works as of this writing).

Cons of Using Shopify for Your Dropshipping Store

monthly shopify fees

Nicer Themes are a Bit Expensive

If you are wanting to change the look of your store, many of the premium themes range from $140 USD and up. There are several free themes so if you’re not too picky about the look of your store those may be sufficient.

Some Apps Have Monthly Fees

There are many features that you can add to your store to enhance the user experience and to streamline your business. However, some of these apps have monthly fees. This can increase your overall monthly costs to run your business.

You Do Not Have Complete Ownership of Your Store

If there is ever a reason that you would want to move your store, it wouldn’t be possible. You wouldn’t be able to move your theme as it would only work within Shopify. The only thing you could do is export a spreadsheet of your products. AliDropship is alternative to Shopify which gives you 100% ownership of your store because it runs on WordPress.

Monthly Fees

Most new store owners are on a budget. You will already have to deal with advertising costs to get people to your store. The monthly store and app fees can put a dent in your wallet when you’re trying to cut costs. A workaround to monthly fees is by using a WordPress dropshipping store such as AliDropship.

A Shopify Alternative to Consider

As I mentioned earlier, Shopify has a ton of great features and is easy to use.

However, there are some people who do not want to pay monthly fees and who also want complete ownership of their store.

During my Shopify free trial, I came across a Shopify alternative called AliDropship. AliDropship is a WordPress plugin that lets you import products from AliExpress into your store.

The plugin does more than that. It has a ton of features to include:

Automation

  • Search and import products
  • Auto updates product information
  • Pricing automation
  • Fulfill orders automatically
  • ePacket shipping filter
  • Auto order tracking

Customization

  • Built-in themes
  • Product customization
  • Unlimited number of products
  • Product variations
  • WooCommerce support

Marketing

  • Discount coupons
  • Product reviews
  • SEO product tags
  • Abandoned cart
  • Email lists

Managing

  • Live statistics
  • Payment gateway integrations
  • Inventory management
  • All-in-One dashboard
  • Cash-back system
  • Free updates and support

WordPress is free to use and there is a one-time fee to buy AliDropship. Therefore, you save a lot of money. What you would have put towards monthly Shopify fees can go towards your advertising budget.

If you are already familiar with using WordPress, you will have no issues using AliDropship. It includes free themes and they even have an option to create a custom webstore for you.

Have you tried Shopify with Oberlo and AliExpress? What do you think about using the platform as a dropshipper?
