New online businesses are being started every single day. People everywhere are beginning to realize the importance of creating a new stream of income.

Whether you want to start a new side hustle or build an online business so that you can eventually quit your job, these five small online businesses are all easy enough to start.

Even better, they are either free or extremely low-cost to start. You don’t need any prior experience and each can be started today.

1. Start a Money-Making Blog

Starting a blog is one of the easiest and lowest-cost online businesses you can start.

If you like to write and there is a specific topic that you enjoy writing about, you are already on your way.

Most successful blogs that are earning full-time incomes started off as hobbies. Some of the most successful blogs are in niches such as family, personal finance, travel, and more.

What is great about blogs is that you can work on them at your convenience. They are really easy to set up and are low-maintenance.

When you begin earning income with your blog, it can be developed into full-time income which means you can work from anywhere in the world.

Blogging income is a great form of passive income if you are willing to dedicate the time and put in the effort.

Getting started is easy. I’ve written a step-by-step blogging guide here. Starting a blog is definitely one of the best things I have done.

Tools You Will Need

Getting your own blog is really simple these days. When creating a blog for income you should avoid free blogging services.

You’ll want to retain complete ownership of your content so it is a good idea to own your blog outright. That is accomplished by hosting your own WordPress website.

Here is what you’ll need to get started:

  • Web hosting – around $70+ a year
  • Domain name – $12+ a year
  • WordPress – free

You can get all three above in one place with HostPapa.

2. Open a Dropshipping Business

Another easy and low-cost business to start is a dropshipping business.

Dropshipping requires an online store so that you can sell physical goods. However, unlike the typical eCommerce store, you do not have to buy your inventory up front and you don’t have to ship it.

The process is really simple. You locate dropshipping suppliers that carry the products that you want to sell. You set up your online dropshipping store and import their products into your store.

When customer’s buy products from your store, you pass along the payment and shipping details to your suppliers who will then ship the products to your customers.

Your profit is the difference between what you charged the customer and what your supplier charged you.

One of the easiest ways to get started is to have your store custom built for you. AliDropship has a great custom dropshipping store service.

Tools You Will Need

There are many eCommerce platforms that you can sign up with to open your dropshipping store. You’ll have to keep in mind the costs as fees do add up quickly.

There may also be other software that you’ll need to install and pay for in order to automate the dropshipping process. Here are the basic things that you will need:

  • Domain name
  • Web hosting
  • Dropshipping software
  • eCommerce platform

I recommend checking out AliDropship. They are an all-in-one service that provides everything you need to open your store.

3. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of my favorite methods for earning income online. It is easy to get started but there is a bit of a learning curve.

As an affiliate marketer, you will be promoting another company’s product in exchange for a commission when a sale is made.

U.S. affiliate marketing spend is due to reach 8.2 billion U.S. dollars by 2022, up from 5.4 billion recorded in 2017.—Statista.com

You have to pick up some online marketing skills. Promoting affiliate products can be done in a variety of ways.

You can start a blog and promote products related to your niche. Some affiliate marketers create simple landing pages and send traffic to them.

What is awesome about affiliate marketing is that you don’t need your own product to get started.

You can find a product that has an affiliate program and begin promoting it right away.

There are hundreds of thousands of affiliate programs and they are free to join. Amazon.com’s Amazon Associates is a popular affiliate program that many beginners start with.

One thing I must warn you about is that when you begin to learn about affiliate marketing it is easy to experience information overload.

You can read about the basics here for free.

Tools You Will Need

Affiliate marketing is free to start and there are muliple ways that you can get started. The easiest way is to have a website. Here are some things you can use to get started:

  • Web hosting
  • WordPress
  • Domain name

Another option is to use a landing page software such as ClickFunnels™. If you use this type of landing page software, it eliminates the need for having to have another website.

4. Start a YouTube Channel for Fun and Profit

Do you have a topic that you love to talk about and not too shy to be on camera? Starting a YouTube channel is free to do and can lead to a nice side income.

Depending on the topic that you choose, you can grow your channel fairly quickly and begin earning income from ads. There are many YouTubers that earn tens of thousands of dollars per month just from their video views.

It won’t happen overnight but with hard work, it is very possible. Being on camera isn’t a requirement.

Many channels are purely screen capture video. Justin Bryant has over 200,000 subscribers on his channel and he isn’t in any of his videos.

Deliver great content and you should have no problem growing a successful YouTube channel.

Tools You Will Need

Contrary to what you may think, you don’t need a bunch of fancy equipment to start your channel. You likely have a smartphone that can record video or a laptop with a camera.

The only other thing you may want to invest in is a decent microphone and you’ll have all that you need. Other things to consider include:

5. Self-Publish Your Own Amazon Kindle Book

Thanks to the Kindle Direct Publishing program, anyone that wants to can self-publish their own book and sell it on Amazon.com.

There are many authors that earn anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand per month by writing eBooks.

I have read several Kindle books and they have all ranged in length. Some are short and some are over 300 pages.

There are some authors that create short eBooks on a regular basis and earn a steady income from their sales.

You will need to learn a bit about the best ways to market your book as well as some of the best software to use to write your books.

You can speed up the learning curve with Stefan James’ KMoney Mastery course.

Tools You Will Need

There really isn’t much you’ll need for publishing your Kindle books besides your favorite word processor. There may be other tools to look into that may help with converting your eBook into a Kindle publishing file.

One piece of software that gets good recommendations is Scrivener.

In Conclusion

Hopefully one or more of these online businesses resonates with you. It is possible to run more than one of these businesses at the same time.

However, I do recommend focusing on one at a time. You’ll likely have more success when you can focus your attention on one business model.

Have you tried any of the options listed above? Which one do you prefer? Leave your feedback in the comments below.
