Selling on eBay is a great way to earn some side income. Although some people do go on to make full-time incomes, it isn’t the norm for most.
Figuring out what the best items to sell on eBay are can take a bit of trial and error. We sold on eBay for a short period of time.
It was long enough to figure out what sold well and what didn’t. I will share below what sold well for us, why we became tired of selling on eBay, and what we do now to earn income online.
Clothing Remains One of the Best Items to Sell on Ebay Right Now
When we first started to sell items on eBay, we started off selling random things such as semi-used perfume/cologne, used purses, shoes, books, and more.
We started to visit thrift stores and bought ceramics, dishes, and other knick-knacks to sell online. It turns out that those items took forever to sell.
Unfortunately, we still have a lot of those items taking up space because they were difficult to sell. Unless we mark them down super cheap, they probably won’t sell.
Eventually, we came across new golf shirts at the thrift store and placed them up for sale. They were name brand shirts and they sold quickly.
We knew we were on to something so we began buying more name brand clothing (mostly men’s clothing.) We stuck with the golf niche for awhile.
We even bought brand new golf shirts on clearance at outlet stores. Surprisingly, they still took a bit of time to sell.
It may have been due to the slow summer months, our price point, and competition.
Since there is so much competition on eBay, unless you sell your items for super cheap, they are harder to sell.
There was no way we were selling them at a loss because we spent our hard earned cash on the shirts. After all of the shirts sold, we slowed down significantly on selling any more clothing.
Although they are big sellers on eBay, the only way for it to be lucrative would be to buy the clothing at wholesale prices in order to make a larger profit.
We simply didn’t have the money nor the time to find a wholesaler for the shirts we liked.
Purses are Some of the Best Things to Sell on Ebay for Profit
When we figured out that purses were great sellers it was by chance. We were given some used purses in excellent condition.
Name brand purses sell very well. We had some lesser brand purses that didn’t sell at all.
Customers are big on brand names for cheap. This includes clothing as well. If you can get your hands on name brand bags in good condition, you will likely make sales.
Keep in mind that there is a lot of competition when it comes to selling purses. Also take note that as a new seller, eBay places limitations on how many purses you can sell.
The limitations are in place to help reduce the selling of fake purses. New sellers must maintain a good track record before any limits are removed.
We received our first negative feedback selling a purse. It was really lame looking back on it. The customer claimed the purse was “ugly”.
Ebay refunds are not fun. It is one of the downsides of selling on the website but you can expect them to happen at some point.
Electronics are Probably the Most Profitable Things to Sell on Ebay
We had a barely used iPod, an old iPhone, and a used digital camera. All three sold quickly. Even with all of the competition for electronics, they were the easiest items to sell.
They did have some minor issues after the buyers received them. For both the iPod and iPhone, I had to remove myself as the owner within my Apple account.
If you do not do this, the new owner cannot use the item. I had no idea about this so it was a huge hassle when the customer contacted me about it.
Also be sure to write a thorough description of your electronic item. For example, the buyer of my old iPhone asked me why it didn’t have a plug.
I made it clear in my description that the original plug was not included. I had to send a link to the original eBay listing to prove it.
Why We Grew Tired of Selling on Ebay
It would have been great to sell full-time on eBay. It was difficult for us to get it off the ground with a limited budget.
We would have had to invest in a lot of inventory up front and there was never any guarantee that the items we bought would sell.
Unfortunately, we still have a lot of the difficult to sell items. We were also tired of dealing with customer refunds, being at the mercy of customer feedback ratings, and the eBay fees.
Now we have shifted our focus to what I have always enjoyed most and that is affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing is simply promoting a company’s products or services in exchange for a percentage of the sale (commission) when someone makes a purchase using your affiliate link.
Affiliate marketing alleviates all of the hassles that come with selling on eBay such as:
- No inventory to buy
- Millions of products to promote
- No shipping or returns
- No customer service
- No fees to pay
Even if you enjoy selling on eBay, you can also make money online with affiliate marketing. There is nothing better than multiple streams of income.
I highly recommend getting a free website and free affiliate marketing training from Wealthy Affiliate.
