Shopify is a reputable and popular eCommerce platform used by many online business owners.
It is the first shopping cart platform I recommend for anyone needing an online store.
Anyone that has products to sell online will find that Shopify is user-friendly and enables you to have your own store up and running quickly.
There are various Shopify plans to choose from depending on your business needs. Below, I’ll explain the differences between which Shopify plan to choose for selling your products online.
Shopify Lite Plan
The Shopify Lite plan is the most inexpensive plan available. It is $9 a month and enables you to sell on social media, in person, or on an existing website.
This plan is great for anyone that doesn’t need a complete eCommerce platform. It is also a great plan if you want to get your footing with selling your items online.
Where You Can Sell Your Items
You will be able to sell your items on your Facebook page’s shop section. This is a huge benefit as there are billions of people on Facebook.
Building your store page’s audience by gathering new fans or paying for advertising are two ways to promote your products on Facebook.
Besides selling on Facebook, you can also sell your items on your website, whether it is on WordPress, Squarespace, Tumblr, or any website that you own.
All you have to do is use Shopify’s Buy Button which lets you generate an embeddable product card and checkout onto your website.

The Shopify Lite Plan Transaction Fees
Use Shopify Payments to accept credit cards online and pay 2.9% + 30¢. Accept payments in person and pay 2.7% + 0¢. Accept credit card payments using an external payment gateway and pay 2.0% on all transactions.
If you don’t have a huge product line, the Shopify Lite plan may be the ideal solution for you.
Basic Shopify Plan Pricing
The Basic plan which is also known as the Shopify starter plan starts at $29 per month.
You get all of the essentials of a full Shopify store minus some features that are included in the standard and advanced plans.
The following features are not included in the Basic Plan:
- Gift cards
- Professional reports
- Abandoned cart recovery
- Advanced report builder
- Third-party calculated shipping rates
The Basic Plan is likely one of the most popular for many small business owners that wish to sell their goods online.
It includes two staff accounts and is the least expensive but provides all of the key features necessary to begin generating revenue right away.
The best part is that you can get started right away using Shopify’s 14-day free trial.
No credit card is required and it allows you to become accustomed with the interface and even make your first sale.
Shopify Standard Plan
The Standard Plan is labled as “Shopify” on the pricing page. It is the next plan up from the Basic Plan.
It costs $79 per month and includes two extra features the Basic Plan does not. The two extra features include:
- Professional reports
- Abandoned cart recovery
This plan does include 3 more staff accounts than the Basic Plan (5 instead of 2).
Advanced Shopify Plan
The Advanced Plan is the most expensive of the plans at $299 per month. This plan includes all of the advanced features that are not included in the Basic Plan.
This plan also has the lowest credit card rates, transaction fees, and the largest Shopify shipping discount. You’ll also get 15 staff accounts with this plan.
The Advanced Plan is ideal for larger stores. For enterprise-level stores, you may want to check out the Shopify Plus Plan below.
Shopify Plus Plan
Out of all the plans listed above, the Shopify Plus plan caters to enterprise-grade, high-volume merchants, and large businesses.
This plan is likely customized per your requirements. There is no pricing listed but you will fill out a form in order to be contacted by a Shopify Plus specialist.
Shopify Transaction Fees
The transaction fees vary from plan to plan. Here they are below:
|Basic Shopify||Shopify||Advanced Shopify|
|Credit Card Rates Online:||2.9% + 30¢||2.6% + 30¢||2.4% + 30¢|
|Credit Card Rates In-Person:||2.7% + 0¢||2.5% + 0¢||2.4% + 0¢|
|Using Shopify Payments:||None||None||None|
|External Payment Gateways:||2.0%||1.0%||0.5%|
Another thing that Shopify does well is their store themes. They have some that are free and premium themes that you can buy.
The premium themes seem to range from $140 and up. They have a ton of themes to choose from in a variety of industries.
Apps enable you to add powerful features and services to your store. There are apps for:
- Product Sourcing
- Social Media
- Customer Service
- Sales Channels
Some Shopify apps are free to use and others have one-time or monthly fees.
Online Jewelry Store Success Using Shopify
I think Shopify is the ideal eCommerce solution for many small business owners.
As a former web designer, I have recommended Shopify for many small business owners that wanted a shopping cart solution.
One success story that I can relate to is an online jewelry store that my sister put together for a client.
The client is doing very well on the Shopify platform. Sales are going well and the store has made running her online business streamlined and efficient.
Small and large businesses alike can benefit from using the Shopify platform. I think for small business owners, the Basic Shopify Plan will work well.
Keep in mind that there are some products and services that are prohibited to sell on the Shopify platform. You can read about them here on their terms of service page.
As your online store grows and develops, there is always the option to upgrade your plan.
It is helpful to try out the service before you commit in order to make sure it has all of the features you need.
Signing up for the 14-Day Free Trial will give you the opportunity to test drive the platform.
What are your needs and goals for opening an online business? Is Shopify one of your primary choices in terms of an eCommerce platform?
I wish you much success in your online business!
