How to Become a Successful Food Blogger and Make Money with Your Blog

My sister Holly, a successful food blogger!

If there is any type of blogger who has a passion for what they write about, it has to be food bloggers.

Food bloggers have some of the most awesome blogs on the web.

Not only do they offer up some delicious recipes, many will share personal stories and have your mouth watering with their amazing food photos.

I know first hand because my sister has an amazing food blog of her own at FMITK.com.

Her blog has helped her land spots on television shows such as Food Fighters, popular food-based YouTube shows, and featured on foodie websites like Food & Wine.

I will share what she has done to achieve her success and how you can become a successful food blogger too!

How to Become a Successful Food Blogger – Get Yourself a Blog!

how to become a successful food blogger

Regardless of your definition for food blogger success, whether it is notoriety, money, or both, it cannot happen without a blog.

If you already have a blog, you can skip this section. If you do not have a blog or want to change the one you have, follow along.

My sister and I both have backgrounds in web development. Therefore, getting a website up comes second nature for us.

I always recommend using WordPress as your blogging platform. It is one of most widely used and supported content management systems on the internet.

Nowadays, getting your own blog up doesn’t require the hiring of a web developer. You can do it all yourself!

There is some technical stuff you’ll have to figure out which I outline here:

However, you do not need to know any of the “techy” stuff at all. You can bypass all of that and save yourself the hassles by getting your free food blog at SiteRubix.

SiteRubix is free and powered by Wealthy Affiliate. It doesn’t require anything except your name and email address.

Best of all, when you buy your own domain name and hosting (through Wealthy Affiliate), they will connect it to your free SiteRubix website and provide free SSL (site security)!

How to Write a Food Blog Post

food blogging tips

Do you know what makes a great blog? There are many factors but two of the most important ones (in my opinion) are passion and content.

A blog is nothing without content and good content isn’t created without having a passion for the subject matter.

The good news is, you are likely very passionate about food or you wouldn’t be concerned about how to become a successful food blogger in the first place.

My sister’s blog posts definitely have passion behind them. When she posts recipes, there is almost always a story behind the creation of the recipe.

She always inserts her unique personality by adding humor and helpful tips. She even takes her own amazing food action shots to go along with each step.

Yes, it is a lot of work but the payoff has been huge. Key takeaways here:

  • Share your personal reasons (your passion) behind the recipe you’re posting
  • Include plenty of food photos of creating your recipe

You don’t need a fancy camera to take your photos. Good lighting (daylight works best) and a smartphone can work on a budget.

One trick is to use nice elements such as white plates, cloth napkins, nicely designed placemats, wood blocks, etc., to add to the scenery of your shot.

As you practice, you will get better!

How to Make Money with Your Food Blog

You have your blog established, you’ve written some good posts, now it is time to learn how to make money with your food blog.

As a food blogger, you have a variety of options to choose from. I will share what my sister’s blog has been able to accomplish as well as other monetization methods.

Land on National Television!

Thanks to my sister’s food blogging efforts, she was contacted via her blog to audition for a spot on a national television show based on home cooks.

She made it all the way to the final casting but wasn’t chosen. However, the producers liked her so much that she was able to audition for a different show and made it!

We were all super excited to watch her on NBC’s Food Fighers. It was an exciting night and she even won some prizes!

Landing on television may or not be your goal. However, if it is one, it is quite possible to achieve it.

A lot of home chefs with food blogs audition for these various shows all the time. Having a food blog serves as a resume when you go up for auditions.

Do a search for casting calls for various cooking shows. Go to the auditions and highlight yourself and your blog.

The Food Network is always casting on their website and Master Chef is in search of home cooks for their series.

You never know what could happen by auditioning!

Promote Products and Services You Use for Commissions

affiliate marketing commissions

This form of blog monetization is also referred to as affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is one of my favorite forms of monetization.

This is because there is no inventory to buy, no shipping, no customer service, and there are millions of products that you can promote.

For example, there are probably various tools that you use in the kitchen to make life easier. Let’s say for example there is a particular food processor that you love.

You rave about it to your family and friends. Why not make some money by recommending it to your readers?

There are a lot of affiliate programs that have kitchen gear to promote. However, one of the largest is Amazon.com’s Associates affiliate program.

You can sign up to become an Amazon affiliate and promote any of their products on your blog!

Imagine earning income from products you use and love. Many food bloggers have created full-time incomes using affiliate marketing.

Of course, there are other things to learn about affiliate marketing such as keyword research and how to write for conversions.

You can learn how it all works for free at Wealthy Affiliate.

Make Money with Your Cooking

Food blogging can open so many doors for you that you may not have even considered. Food is your passion and you like to cook.

You can make money from your cooking by starting your own catering business, pop-up cooking events, or even a supper club. My sister loves feeding people and has started her own supper club with her best friend.

Is there one dish that you specialize in? I know of a food blogger who started selling her own cinnamon bun treats and markets them through Instagram.

In Conclusion

There are so many directions that you can go in with your passion for food. Just think that it can all start with your own food blog.

Your food blog will serve as your home base. It is where people will find you while searching for a recipe or other keywords.

It is where you will obtain loyal followers (fans). You may even get some free swag (new products to try for a review on your blog.)

You could even write your own cookbook and sell it from your blog. The possibilities are endless.

If you have any questions or want to share your success story as a food blogger, please leave them in the comments below.

  1. Amazing information!!! I can’t believe your sister has gained so much popularity just from her food blog!! I love food and would one day like chronicle the experiences my spouse and I have with food from all over the world. Affiliate marketing is a great way to earn some income while doing it. Thank you!!

    1. You’re welcome, Constance! I think starting your own food blog would work out really well. It is a great niche and definitely one that has earning potential. 🙂

  2. Hi there Eartha,

What a fantastic lesson you have shared with us on how to be (or become) a successful food blogger. Everyone has to eat! and a lot of people just love cooking and trying new stuff!

With food blogging it really could be absolutely limitless! Niche that might sound too broad but it can be broken down to types of food like Asian, Carribean, Mexican and so on!

    1. Hi Derek!

I agree with you. The food blogging niche is almost limitless in terms of what you could write about. Not only that, it is a fun and creative niche. My sister has had so many great experiences because of food blogging. Thank you for your feedback!

  3. This is amazing. I have watched food programs many times and thought, how to you monetise it? Surely writing about food cannot be that lucrative?

Does your sister live only on the income from blogs and the like? Does she perhaps focus on a particular cuisine? I`ll be looking into this for sure!

    1. Hi Mat,

Fortunately, my sister continues to do what she loves (supper clubs) and receives invites to cook on popular cooking shows (YouTube and TV). These are all methods of earning income. Her blog serves as her “home base” to showcase her cooking style and recipes. There are food bloggers that earn full-time incomes from their blogs. It is quite a lucrative niche indeed!

    1. Hi Norman,

Thank you for your feedback. I did have a lot of fun writing this post since I have been able to experience my sister’s success with her. We were able to attend the taping of the Food Fighters episode and watch it all happen live. It was a great experience! Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Hello Eatha! Thank you for an inspiring article about it to make a food blog.
I must admit that we are bombarded with food programs every day.
As a single parent, it is important that I later something healthy and tasty for my son every day.
I bought a few utensils from Amazon after I’ve read a food blog.
Yes I bought a device which can give food the right core temperature through a food blog.
But when I look at youtube and search as I see tons of pages dealing with the cook.
If I started writing about food and the way I’m doing it on, I did not drown in the competition against others who write about the same topic?
    Steen

    1. Hi Steen,

I don’t think you have to worry too much about competition if you start a food blog. Everyone has a unique spin on how they feel about food, how they cook it, and what they use to prepare it. As long as you have a passion for what you are writing about, there is plenty of room in that niche. Thanks for your comment!
